A Santa Monica man took his own life by jumping from the 15th floor of an apartment building in the 1400 block of Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica, Tuesday, August 2nd, Santa Monica police alleged.

The 39-year-old-man fell to his death after jumping out of an open apartment window shortly before 8 p.m., police said.

The man had been involved in a domestic dispute with his former wife earlier in the evening at her home, where he stabbed her with a knife, police allege.

Santa Monica police had gone to the 1000 block of 20th Street at 6:05 p.m., where the former wife alleged that the man had stabbed her several times in the upper body and fled, police said.

The woman was taken to a local hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

She alleged that her former husband had psychological problems and was suicidal, according to police.

Police officers talked to the man before he eventually ran to an open window and jumped, police said.

“When he jumped out, the officers tried to grab him,” Lt. Frank Fabrega said.

The man fell 15 floors and was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.

The county coroner’s office removed the body.

The case investigation is being handled by the Santa Monica Police Department Robbery-Homicide Unit.
