Abuelita’s Christmas Carol to be performed at Santa Monica Playhouse
The Santa Monica Playhouse and ARG Productions will present the West Coast premiere of Abuelita’s Christmas Carol Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 15 and 16 at the Santa Monica Playhouse.
Performances are scheduled at 2 and 4 p.m. Dec. 15, and 2 p.m. Dec. 16 at the playhouse, 1211 Fourth St., Santa Monica. The show will also be performed in Spanish at 4 p.m. Dec. 16.
Written and performed by Alex Garza, the comic and nostalgic tale offers a new take on a classic holiday theme.
The play follows Rosa, a 70-year-old abuelita (grandmother) with her own cooking show who begins to question her life and its meaning as the holiday season approaches. Only a journey navigated by the people of her past can bring her to the enlightenment she needs to realize how much she has truly made a difference.
The ghosts of her loved ones appear to her and lead her to this understanding, as she is filled with memories, both happy and sad. Garza portrays his “grandmamma Rosita” and nine other characters, including the ghost of his little pig, in this holiday tale.
The West Coast premiere will be the seventh year Garza has performed his most beloved play, and the first year he will perform it in both English and Spanish, in tribute to his maternal grandmother.
The play is suitable for ages 9 and older. Tickets are $12.50 for general admission, $10.50 for kids age 13 and under, with family discounts available for groups of six or more.
