Passenger volume during the Thanksgiving travel period at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is expected to increase 16 percent from last year to approximately 1.78 million passengers, airport officials predict.

The busiest of the holiday travel days is anticipated to be Monday, Nov. 28, with an estimated 167,000 travelers passing through LAX, airport officials said.

According to local travel-industry experts, this year’s change in the busiest travel day from Thanksgiving Eve to Nov. 28 is due to passengers opting to travel on the holiday itself when airfares traditionally cost less than on days prior to a major holiday, and passengers extending their trips.

Airport officials suggest passengers departing LAX during daily peak travel periods – from 6 to 9 a.m.; from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and from 7 to 10 p.m. – arrive in their airline’s ticketing lobbies two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international flights.

Most domestic air travelers can avoid ticketing counter lines by checking in with their airlines through the airlines’ websites before coming to the airport.
