The Santa Monica Playhouse will present the musical Backstreet as part of its Jewish Heritage Series, with previews scheduled Saturday, April 17th through Sunday, May 2nd.
Preview events will be held at 8 p.m. Saturdays and 6 p.m., Sundays at the playhouse, 1211 Fourth St., Santa Monica. The opening performance is scheduled for Saturday, May 8th with the play running through June 20th.
Backstreet is a portrait of life, love, and loyalty played out by a family of Backstreet Ladies in a house of Jewish “working girls” in the New York ghetto, circa 1905.
The play portrays a certain aspect of the Jewish immigrant women’s experience set against the backdrop of the women’s movement at the turn of the 20th century
The production is directed by Chris DeCarlo, with book, music and lyrics by DeCarlo, Evelyn Rudie and Matthew Wrather. The cast includes DeCarlo and Rudie, joined by Vanessa Cate, Carolyn Freeman Champ, James Hassett, Jake Levy, Lauren Marr and Serena Dolinsky as “Rivkele.”
Authentically detailed period costuming was recreated by award-winning designers Ashley Hayes and Cheryl Jennings.
Tickets are $17.50 for all previews. Admission for performances is $25 for general admission with discounts available for students, teachers, seniors and groups of eight or more. Ticket price includes a complimentary coffee and dessert buffet at intermission.
