In high school baseball playoff games:

The Ocean League champion Santa Monica High School Vikings earned a 5-0 shutout victory over visiting La Habra High School in the first round of the Southern Section playoffs Thursday, May 17th.

The Vikings (21-9) got off to a strong start with three runs in the first inning and added two more runs in the third inning on the way to the playoff victory.

Santa Monica, which finished with six hits in the game, was scheduled to play St. Bonaventure High of Ventura at home in the playoff second round Tuesday, May 22nd.

The St. Monica High School Mariners were defeated 7-2 by host Gabrielino High School of San Gabriel in the first round of the Southern Section Division V playoffs Thursday, May 17th.

The Mariners were first on the scoreboard with two runs in the top of the third inning but Gabrielino responded with five runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead for good.

St. Monica finished tied for second in the Del Rey League with a league record of 5-7 and had an overall record of 10-14 this season.

In high school softball playoff games:

The Ocean League champion Santa Monica High School Vikings scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to open the Southern Section playoffs with a 1-0 first round victory over visiting Burbank High School in extra innings Friday, May 18th.

The Vikings (26-3) were outhit in the game 6-2 but picked up the playoff victory with one run in the ninth inning.

Santa Monica was scheduled to play at Oak Park High School in the playoff second round Tuesday, May 22nd.
