The 2006-07 high school basketball season has kicked off with many local boys and girls teams competing in tournaments.

In high school boys basketball games:

The St. Bernard High School Vikings captured the Mira Costa Pacific Shores Tournament Championship with a 62-47 victory over South Torrance High School Saturday, December 2nd.

The Vikings (4-0) remain undefeated this season after earning victories in their first four games.

St. Bernard fell behind 20-14 at the end of the first quarter against South Torrance but evened the game at 28-28 by halftime.

The Vikings then took the lead at the start of the second half and never let it go.

Junior guard Devin Price scored a game-high 22 points for the Vikings.

Senior forward Jourdan Sweeney, who added ten points for St. Bernard, was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

St. Bernard will next play at Price High School at 7 p.m. Friday, December 8th.

The Venice High School Gondoliers were defeated 67-53 by Troy High of Fullerton in the Pasadena High School Rose City Roundball Classic Saturday, December 2nd.

The Gondoliers (1-3) will next play at San Fernando High School at 4 p.m. Monday, December 11th.

In their first Ocean League game of the season, the Santa Monica High School Vikings picked up a 65-53 victory over Inglewood High School Saturday, December 2nd.

The Vikings (3-1, 1-0) will next play against El Segundo High School in the El Segundo Hoop Classic tournament at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, December 7th.

The St. Monica High School Mariners were defeated 64-58 by Windward High School of Los Angeles in the Brethren Christian Warrior Tournament Saturday, December 2nd.

After trailing 30-24 at halftime, the Mariners (2-2) scored 21 points in the third quarter to take a 55-40 lead, but Windward responded with 24 points in the fourth quarter to close out with the victory.

Bryce Hamaguchi and Ryan Zelig led the Mariners with 15 points each in the game.

Brandon Miller added nine points and seven rebounds for St. Monica, which will next play against St. Paul High School in the St. Anthony Tournament at 6 p.m. Thursday, December 7th.

In high school girls basketball games:

The Santa Monica High School Vikings defeated Bishop Montgomery High School 67-57 in the Redondo Beach tournament Monday, December 4th.

Junior forward Katy Keating led the Vikings with 20 points and seven rebounds in the game.

The Vikings (4-1), the number-19 ranked team by the Los Angeles Times, will next host Mira Costa High School of Manhattan Beach in a non-league game at 6 p.m. Tuesday, December 12th.

The Westchester High School Comets were defeated 57-27 by Los Osos High School of Rancho Cucamonga in the South Torrance Winter Shootout tournament Monday, December 4th.

The Comets (2-3) will next play against Windward High in the South Torrance tournament at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, December 7th.

The Venice High School Gondoliers were also defeated 70-41 by Los Osos High School in the Lady Cat Classic tournament Saturday, December 2nd.

The Gondoliers (2-3) fell behind 18-9 by the end of the first quarter and went into halftime trailing 34-15.
