In high school boys basketball games:

In their first Western League game of the season, the Venice High School Gondoliers grabbed a 52-49 victory over visiting Hamilton High School Tuesday, January 9th.

The Gondos (5-11, 1-0) will next face one of the league’s top teams in a game against host Fairfax High School at 7 p.m. Thursday, January 11th.

The St. Bernard High School Vikings opened Del Rey League play with a 41-37 loss to host Bishop Montgomery High School Friday, January 5th.

In a low-scoring first half for both teams, the Vikings (11-6, 0-1) were held to just three points in the first quarter and went into halftime narrowly trailing 13-12.

Junior guard Devin Price was the leading scorer for the Vikings with nine points.

Senior guard Ryan Jones finished with eight points and three rebounds and senior forward Jourdan Sweeney added six points and five rebounds in the game.

The Vikings will next play against Los Angeles Jordan in a non-league game at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 13th.

In their first Camino Real League game of the season, the St. Monica High School Mariners were defeated 59-25 by host La Salle High School Friday, January 5th.

The Mariners (9-6, 0-1) struggled early in the game, scoring only four points in the first quarter, and trailed 33-13 at halftime.

St. Monica continued to face trouble in the second half against the defense for La Salle, which cruised to victory.

Bryce Hamaguchi and David Holguin each scored five points in the game for the Mariners.

St. Monica will next host Cantwell-Sacred Heart High School in a Camino Real League game at 7:30 p.m. Friday, January 12th.

The Santa Monica High School Vikings captured the Santa Barbara Tournament Championship after a 67-54 victory over Oxnard High School Friday, December 29th.

The Vikings (14-1) reached the tournament title after earning three consecutive victories over Agoura, Santa Barbara and Pasadena high schools.

Senior center Ari Feldman was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

The Vikings will play against host Inglewood High School in an Ocean League game Friday, January 12th.

In high school girls basketball games:

The Westchester High School Comets outscored El Camino High School of Oceanside 13-3 in the fourth quarter but lost 32-29 in a non-league game Saturday, December 30th.

Kala McCoy scored seven points and had three rebounds to lead the Comets, who trailed 22-14 at halftime.

The Comets (6-9) will next play against host Hamilton High School in a Western League game at 4 p.m. Friday, January 12th.

The St. Monica High School Mariners opened the Camino Real League season with a 46-43 overtime victory over host La Salle High School Thursday, January 4th.

After the two teams ended regulation tied 35-35, the Mariners (5-10, 1-0) picked up 11 points in overtime to take the victory.

Senior forward Melissa Palmieri, who grabbed 13 rebounds, was the leading scorer for St. Monica with 19 points and senior Alex Pegnato was the other double-digit scorer with 15 points.

The Mariners will next play at Mary Star of the Sea High School in a Camino Real League game at 7 p.m. Thursday, January 18th.

Santa Monica High School earned a narrow 57-56 non-league victory over Sheldon High School of Sacramento Saturday, December 30th.

The Vikings (8-7) will play their first home league game against Inglewood High School at 6 p.m. Friday, January 12th.

The St. Bernard High School Vikings were defeated 68-44 by visiting Mary Star of the Sea High School in a non-Del Rey League game Thursday, January 4th.

The Vikings (2-12) will next play against host La Salle High School in a non-league game at 4 p.m. Thursday, January 11th.
