In high school boys basketball games:

The Westchester High School Comets finished in fourth place in the Erie Cathedral Prep Tournament in Pennsylvania after a 64-60 loss to host Erie Cathedral Prep Saturday, January 13th.

It was the second consecutive loss in the tournament for the Comets (10-3, 2-1), who were defeated 68-65 by Lakewood St. Edward High School of Ohio in the first round Friday, January 12th.

Trailing 12-7 in the first quarter, the Comets scored 20 points in the second quarter to climb to 28-27 at halftime, but Erie Cathedral was able to hold off the Westchester challenge in the second half.

Dane Suttle led the Comets with 18 points in the game. Jarred Dubois added 14 points and Dwayne Polee finished with ten points.

Westchester will next face Redondo Beach High School in the West Torrance Shootout tournament at 7 p.m. Saturday, January 20th.

In a visiting Western League game Thursday, January 11th, the Venice High School Gondoliers were defeated 89-49 by Fairfax High School, the fourth-ranked team in the Southland by the Los Angeles Times.

The Gondoliers (5-12, 1-1) will next face host L.A. CES in a Western League game at 7 p.m. Friday, January 19th.

In their first visiting Ocean League game of the season, the Santa Monica High School Vikings were defeated 67-49 by Inglewood High School Friday, January 19th.

The Vikings (15-2, 1-1) won 14 consecutive games before suffering the league loss to Inglewood.

Santa Monica will next play at home against Culver City High School at 7:30 p.m. Friday, January 19th.

The St. Monica High School Mariners picked up a 54-46 victory in their Camino Real League home opener against Cantwell-Sacred Heart High School Friday, January 12th.

After losing to La Salle High School in their first league game of the season, the Mariners (11-6, 2-1) have won two consecutive league games and are currently in second place in the league standings.

The Mariners jumped out to a 16-7 lead in the first quarter against Cantwell-Sacred Heart and went into halftime with a 22-15 advantage.

Senior guard Bryce Hamaguchi finished with a game-high 26 points, including six three pointers for St. Monica.

Junior guard Ryan Zelig was the other double-digit scorer for the Mariners, with 11 points.

St. Monica will next face Buckley High of Sherman Oaks in a non-league game at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, January 20th.

In the San Fernando Valley Showcase Tournament at Pierce College Saturday, January 13th, the St. Bernard High School Vikings lost 66-49 to Los Angeles Jordan High School.

The Vikings (11-7, 1-1) will next play against host Serra High in a Del Rey League game at 7:30 p.m. Friday, January 19th.

In high school girls basketball games:

The Westchester High School Comets earned a convincing 52-30 victory over host Hamilton High School in a Western League game Friday, January 12th.

The Comet offense got on fire early by scoring 22 points in the first quarter, when Hamilton was held to just four points.

Westchester (8-9, 2-0) held a 33-11 lead at halftime.

Senior guard Kala McCoy led the Comets with 12 points and senior center Phyllis Jensen was right behind with 11 points in the game.

Westchester will next host Fairfax High School in a league game at 7 p.m. Thursday, January 18th.

The Venice High School Gondoliers held off a late challenge by visiting Fairfax High School to defeat the Lions 59-54 in a Western League game Friday, January 12th.

After taking a 50-36 lead into the fourth quarter, the Gondoliers (6-8, 2-0) managed to prevent the comeback effort by the Lions, who racked up 18 points in the final quarter.

Venice senior guard Shannon Nakamine finished with a game-high 22 points and junior guard Marlee Rice added 14 points.

The Gondos will next host L.A. CES in a league game at 4 p.m. Friday, January 19th.

The St. Bernard High School Vikings lost 63-51 to host La Salle High School in a Del Rey League game Thursday, January 11th.

The Vikings (2-14, 0-2) will next host St. Paul High School in a non-league game at 7 p.m. Thursday, January 18th.
