The Boys & Girls Club of Venice was among 27 clubs in Los Angeles County that participated in the annual “Live Positively” basketball tournament at LA Live and STAPLES Center in downtown Los Angeles Aug. 7.

Approximately 500 members of county Boys & Girls Clubs took part in the event hosted by Coca-Cola.

Coca-Cola partnered with AEG to close off the street and create six basketball courts where club members played 5-on-5 games against area clubs.

Club members were able to re-energize inside STAPLES Center, where they lounged, played games and were treated to healthy snacks and beverages.

“Coca Cola is proud to be a partner with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and sponsor the Triple Play program,” said Leslie Billinger, commercial execution leader for Coca-Cola in Los Angeles, and a member of the board of directors at the Boys & Girls Club of Venice. “The program emphasizes good nutrition, regular physical activity and improving overall well-being.

“This is our second year hosting the tournament, and we are thrilled about the positive feedback from the kids and club staff. Our goal was to create an active and fun day for kids and clubs, and share positive information about the importance of physical activity.”

Monte Hartman, board member and vice president of programs and facilities for the Boys & Girls Club of Venice, added, “We are honored that Coca-Cola created this tournament for our club members. With so many summer schools closed due to budget issues, we are thrilled that we could add this fun day into the mix of our summer programs.”

In addition to the tournament, Coca-Cola has agreed to donate $10,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs in Los Angeles County as a match from the community donations in the month of August.

To donate, www.BeGreatLA.org/, or via text messaging “BeGreatLA” to 20222, which creates a $5 charge to wireless phone bill.
