The Vista del Mar Neighbors Association of Playa del Rey organized a weekend beautification project at the Playa del Rey Landmark late last month.

The property was formerly an asphalt median dumping ground in the 1970s at Culver Boulevard and Pershing Drive, in the business district of Playa del Rey, but it was transformed into a community “green” landmark after the founders of the Vista del Mar Neighbors Association lobbied in 1987 and received city funding for the project.

The beautification project October 25th was led by neighbors association members Julie and Chuck Leib, head of the beautification committee, Lunel LeMieux and Pam Horaceck and alumni of Venice High School (Class of 1979).

The Venice High School cross country team, supervised by assistant coach Leslie Esquivel, another 1979 graduate of Venice High, also pitched in during the project, which included removing weeds and planting at the site.

“Playa del Rey is special because of these outstanding neighbors and friends who really care about our community,” said Julie Inouye, co-founder of the Vista del Mar Neighbors Association.
