The Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Monica hosted a sports and games event in celebration of “Olympic Day” at its Mar Vista Gardens branch in Del Rey June 26.
The event at the Jack and Cindy Jones Youth Center was one of more than 700 Olympic Day celebrations that took place nationwide between June 21 and 30. They included family-friendly activities and interactive learning experiences that promote the ideals of the Olympic movement, club officials said.
“We are excited to take part in Olympic Day and inspire kids in the Mar Vista Gardens community to lead healthy, active lives,” said Aaron Young, president and CEO of the Santa Monica club. “The Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Monica is proud to support the Olympic movement and teach our kids about good sportsmanship through excellence, respect and friendship.”
Olympic Day, traditionally held on June 23, is celebrated by thousands of people in more than 160 countries. Commemorating the birth of the modern Olympic Games, Olympic Day is not only a celebration, but an international effort to promote fitness and well-being in addition to Olympic ideals of fair play, perseverance, respect and sportsmanship, according to the Boys & Girls Club.
