The girls Level 5 team from Broadway Gymnastics in Del Rey came out on top over 60 teams to win its second consecutive state title and the Level 4 team finished in third place in the state competition.
More than 100 gymnastics clubs in California have the opportunity to qualify and compete in the state championship.
Broadway Gymnastics team members dominated the state competition by earning more state champion titles than any other team in Southern California, including 80 all-around and event medals, coaches said.
The Level 5 team is comprised of a number of local gymnasts, including Santa Monica residents Natasha Rothenbucher, Madison DeYoung and Caterina Kachadoorian, Mar Vista residents Evan Pakshong and Ari Brown, and Westchester resident Sydney Freiden.
Pakshong took home the Level 5 state championship, Rothenbucher finished second and DeYoung was third. Pakshong also captured the beam state title and tied with Rothenbucher for first place on the vault and floor exercise events.
Freiden was the winner in the floor exercise and tied for second on vault with DeYoung, who won the bronze medal on beam. Brown finished in third place in the floor exercise.
Broadway’s Level 4 team grabbed six all-around state championships, more than any other Level 4 team. Del Rey AA state champions are Seanna Duffy-Reddy of Venice, who was first on bars, and Anna Pack of Santa Monica, who also won the gold medal on vault.
The Level 6 team earned two AA titles and six individual event championships. Del Rey resident Cydney Kone won her second consecutive state title and was also the beam state champion. Santa Monica resident Chloe Meshel-Wood took home the silver medal on the floor exercise.
“We reached our goal this season, the [Level] 5s won state, 4s placed in the top three, and we surpassed our goal to make 38 state champions and had 39 state champions, more than any other program in SoCal,” Broadway girls team head coach Kort Borg said. “I’m extremely excited by the success we had this year, and all the hard work the athletes and coaches put in was tremendous.
“Now we are getting ready for next year.”
