The cause of death has been deferred for a Marina del Rey woman whose body was found off the coast of Rancho Palos Verdes, Los Angeles County coroner’s officials said.
Divers discovered the body of 50-year-old Rebecca Weiss in the waters near the Terranea Resort in Palos Verdes Aug. 18, a week after she had reportedly gone snorkeling in the area, authorities said.
An autopsy was conducted Aug. 19 but the cause of death has been deferred pending toxicology and other tests, a coroner spokesman said.
Weiss had gone free diving alone in the morning Aug. 11 but did not return home in the afternoon, her husband told authorities. The husband reported her missing that night after he said he went to the area where they frequently free dive and found her car and some personal items on the beach but did not locate her, said Lt. Michael Rodriguez of the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau.
Several search efforts were conducted involving numerous emergency responders before Weiss’ body was ultimately located Aug. 18.
Sheriff’s personnel, volunteers and family members were in the area of the resort that day handing out flyers to the public to obtain information regarding Weiss’ whereabouts.
Some family members had expressed suspicions to TV news stations regarding the behavior of Alan Weiss, the victim’s husband, but investigators reported that the husband has been fully cooperative during the investigation.
