Playa del Rey community members and Los Angeles City officials plan to mark the grand re-opening of the Del Rey Lagoon playground during a celebration Saturday, April 4th.
The celebration is scheduled from 12:30 to 5 p.m. at the lagoon park, 6660 Esplanade Place, Playa del Rey. Parking is available in the dirt lot located west of the stoplight at Culver Boulevard and Vista del Mar.
City Councilman Bill Rosendahl and city Recreation and Parks Department general manager Jon Mukri are scheduled to attend a ribbon cutting ceremony from 1 to 1:30 p.m. Former Green Bay Packer and NFL Hall of Famer Willie Davis is expected to make a special appearance at the celebration.
Renovations began last fall to replace the old playground equipment, restore the dilapidated bathroom facility and reconstruct the parking lot. The improvements, totaling approximately $800,000, were funded by developer fees.
Among the planned activities are a stage walk-on parade with children in costume at 1:30 p.m., a ìSummer of Loveî concert and show as a tribute to the late 1960s, and a K-9 unit demonstration by the Los Angeles Police Department. Pony rides, a moon bouncer, fire truck rides and face painting will also be featured.
Visitors are encouraged to bring their own picnic for the celebration.
