As part of the Chinese New Year celebration at Broadway Elementary School in Venice Feb. 1, students and staff were treated to demonstrations by some nationally recognized masters of Chinese folk art.
The visiting artists from Chongqing, China, brought to the school by the UCLA Confucius Institute, showed various representations of Chinese folk art forms, including sand painting, sugar syrup painting, face changing, bamboo blinds making, leave vein painting and boxwood carving.
Students were able to witness the artists at work, ask questions and learn about traditional art forms from China.
Additionally, the UCLA Chinese Music Ensemble was invited to perform with the artists at the school.
Broadway Elementary launched its Mandarin Immersion Program in the fall, offering two kindergarten classes in half Mandarin and half English.
