The new Santa Monica Main Public Library will celebrate its grand opening from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, January 7th, at 601 Santa Monica Blvd., Santa Monica. Admission is free.
Construction began in 2001 and cost $73.9 million. Key features of the new library include multiple entrances, garden spaces, and window walls.
The grand opening schedule of events includes various activities for children and families.
n 10 a.m. — Welcome and opening remarks in the North Courtyard by Santa Monica mayor Robert Holbrook; city librarian Greg Mullen; city library board chair Edward Edwards; and actresses Jamie Lee Curtis and Rhea Perlman, both of whom have written children’s books.
n 10:45 a.m. — Ribbon cutting ceremony and photographs in the North Courtyard.
n 11 a.m. — Book readings by Curtis and Perlman in the Martin Luther King Jr. Auditorium. They will sign books from noon to 12:30 p.m. in the Central Courtyard.
n 11 a.m. — A theatrical puppet show called Harry and the Tyrannosaurus Rex, performed by Swazzle Puppets. For ages four and up; in the Children’s Activity Room.
n Noon to 1:30 p.m. — Interviews with Santa Monica community and library project stakeholders, including partner-in- charge and architect John Ruble from Moore Ruble Yudell Architects and Planners; president of the Friends of the Library Board Jon Arenberg; project manager David Selna from Morley Construction; landscape architect Pamela Burton from Pamela Burton and Company; and artist Carl Cheng. In the Martin Luther King Jr. Auditorium.
n 1 p.m. — Fiesta! featuring the culture of Mexico through stories, artifacts, and folk dance. For ages four and up; in the Children’s Activity Room.
n 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Martin Luther King Jr. Auditorium — Interviews with local authors, including Ernest Marquez, Santa Monica Beach: A Collector’s Pictorial History; Sid Fleischman, The Whipping Boy; Sonya Sones, One of Those Hideous Books Where the Mother Dies; and Carolyn See, Making a Literary Life.
n 2:45 p.m. — Janeece Flint presents an interactive, theatrical program that brings books to life called From Mother Goose to Dr. Seuss. For ages three and up in the Children’s Activity Room.
n 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. — A presentation by The Animal Guys in the Martin Luther King Jr. Auditorium. The Santa Monica-based wildlife education program features appearances by a dozen wild or exotic animals, including a Siberian lynx, porcupine, squirrel monkey, and a two-toed sloth.
