Construction of a youth aquatic center has begun at Dockweiler State Beach in Playa del Rey.

The new aquatic center will be at the end of Imperial Highway at Vista del Mar.

The youth activity center will serve as the southern headquarters for the Los Angeles County WATER (Water Awareness, Training, Education and Recreation) youth education program, which offers aquatic sports camps for youths. The $6.2 million project is jointly funded by County of Los Angeles Proposition A and State of California Proposition 12 bond funds.

The 8,800-square-foot building will consist of multipurpose meeting and training facilities, administrative space, indoor storage facilities, restroom and locker facilities, and storage for beach equipment.

The project is expected to be completed in April next year.
