The Santa Monica College (SMC) newspaper, Corsair, won 18 awards, including six first-place honors, in the Journalism Association of Community Colleges statewide competition, held in Los Angeles.

The awards reflect achievements of the staff under fall semester editor Aaron Howell and current editor Jeremy Meyer, who also won an editor recognition award. The faculty advisor is Barbara Baird.

Capturing first-place awards in the mail-in category, reflecting the work of the fall 2005 Corsair staff, were Peter Switzer for photo story/essay; Theo Encarnado, news photo; Chad K. Uyeno, sports action photo; and Ajmal Noorzayee, sports profile story.

First-place honors in the live competition, in which the current staff participated, went to Lauren Ciancimino for front-page design and Kyosti Kauppinen for news photo.

Also, in the mail-in portion of the competition, second-, third- and fourth-place awards and honorable mentions went to Michael Hernandez, Kauppinen, Geoffrey Dunn, Morgan Genser, Uyeno, Nouri Abou Rass, Jacqui Grennan and Jessica Haroonian.

Sam Tenney captured a second-place honor in the live competition.

Gerard Burkhart, photojournalism professor, also won the Faculty Volunteer Award.
