Marina del Rey sailor Nikki Obel and her teammate Chris Vilicich were recognized for their sportsmanship when competing in the 2011 Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta in Miami.

Obel, a member of the Del Rey Yacht Club who is supported by the Santa Monica Bay Sailing Foundation, and Vilicich, of Palos Verdes, competed against 559 sailors from 22 different countries and 25 different states in the regatta at the Coral Reef Yacht Club.

Following the competition, the Obel/Vilicich team was presented the Sportsmanship Trophy for Fairness, Respect and Graciousness, which recognizes courteous actions and fairness with other competitors and the race committee.

One example of where the teammates displayed sportsmanship was after they were disqualified by going over the start line early, they came back to the race committee signal boat to apologize for possibly leading others over the line early, according to the committee.

Obel graduated from Saint Anastasia Catholic School in Playa del Rey and currently is a junior at Marymount High School. Vilicich is a senior at Palos Verdes High School.
