Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies shot and wounded a man near the Downtown Santa Monica / Fourth Street Station of the Expo Line on Tuesday afternoon.

The shooting occurred a few minutes before 1 p.m., and the injured man was transported to a local hospital in an unknown condition, Deputy Juanita Navarro-Suarez said.

Navarro-Suarez declined to confirm or deny reports by the Los Angeles Times and other news outlets that the man who was shot had been armed with a knife and lunged toward deputies.

Investigators shut down the station well into the evening.

Metro officials deployed buses to shuttle stranded riders to the 17th Street Expo station, Metro spokesman Paul Gonzales said.
