The Best Friends Animal Society will host what is billed as the nationís largest pet adoption festival from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 26th, at Westchester Park, Manchester Avenue and Lincoln Boulevard.

More than 1,000 homeless dogs, cats, puppies, kittens, rabbits and parrots from more than 60 rescue groups and Los Angeles shelters will be up for adoption. Typically, around 400 animals find new homes during these one-day festivals, event organizers say.

Animals up for adoption will represent a wide variety of ages, breeds, sizes and personalities. Each animal has its own unique story ñ some have been rescued from mistreatment or abandonment, some have never known a home other than a shelter or foster home, and all are in need of loving families to adopt them, according to the animal society.

ìThis is a very powerful event ñ it not only impacts the pet overpopulation crisis in Los Angeles and creates public awareness of the problem, but also saves the lives of innocent animals, one pet at a time,î said Francis Battista, Best Friendsí director of Los Angeles Programs.

ìThroughout the last decade, the adoption festivals have found new homes for more than 5,000 homeless dogs, cats and rabbits. With these tough economic times, and more and more animals being dumped in shelters, events like this can really make a difference for homeless animals.î

The free event will include a childrenís activity pavilion, all-day dog agility, frisbee and flyball demonstrations, a ìShelter Dog Parade,î pet psychics, veterinarians and dog trainers, pet-related products and service vendors, a food court and celebrity guests. The event is presented by PETCO and Chrissieís Fund, and sponsored by Wells Fargo, Centinela Feed, Dogís Life magazine, and The American Dog magazine.

In an effort to help people who can no longer care for their pets, Best Friends will offer an opportunity for people to show their pets in the private adoption booth at the Best Friends Adoption Festival. Best Friends also will offer assistance with the adoption application process and the screening process for potential adopters. To sign up, robinh@bestfriends.org/.

Best Friends hopes to distribute some 3,000 pounds of food to shelters and rescues by holding a food drive at the Spring Pet Adoption Festival.
