Eight Team Santa Monica swimmers had standout performances at the California Junior Lifeguard Championships in Santa Barbara July 21st.

The swimmers were part of the Los Angeles County Junior Lifeguard All-Star Team that had won their spots in a county-wide competition.

The junior lifeguards are divided into age categories at the competition. In the “A” category, Team Santa Monica member Colette Gulick, 14, came in second in the ocean distance swim and was also a member of the third-place “A” swim relay team.

In the “B” category, Liliana Casso, 12, won the run-swim-run and ocean distance swim. Marisa Purcell, 14, took second place in the ocean distance swim and third in the run-swim-run. Both swimmers were part of the first-place “B” swim relay team.

In the “C” category, Nick DeVito, 11, placed first in the run-swim-run and sixth in the ocean distance swim. Tristan Marsh, 11, finished second in the run-swim-run and the rescue race, and fourth in the ocean distance swim. Meriel Mitsakos, 11, placed second in both the run-swim-run and the ocean distance swim.

Other strong performances included Jenny Johnson, 11, who placed seventh in the run-swim-run, and Alexander Landau, 11, who was ninth in the run-swim-run.

The championships are sponsored by the California Surf Lifesaving Association, a nonprofit organization chartered to promote beach safety awareness and professional open-water lifesaving standards.

Team Santa Monica recently took ten swimmers to “sectionals,” the senior summer championships in Clovis.

Team Santa Monica began competition at the Junior Olympics in Fullerton August 1st, where eight junior lifeguard swimmers and 24 teammates are competing.

The team practices at Santa Monica College.
