The Sherry Frumkin Gallery in Santa Monica is presenting an exhibition this month of new paintings and a performance by artist Doni Silver Simons.
The exhibit of paintings, described by the artists as “ragged, primal, yet elegant moments of exploration,” will be on view from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday through Tuesday, Aug. 6 through 31 at the gallery, 3026 Airport Ave. Studio 21, Santa Monica.
The performance, August: A Study, which marks Silver Simons’ return to solo performance work, will take place in the gallery weekdays from 8 to 10 a.m. starting on Thursday, Aug. 12 and ending Aug. 31. The gallery will be open to the public during the early morning hours of the performance.
A conversation with Silver Simons is also scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18.
In the new paintings, Silver Simons poses questions and “confronts preconceptions regarding the dissolution of time and materials,” a gallery spokesperson says. While torn and raw in appearance, the work aims to retain Silver Simons’ conceptual refinement, the spokesperson explains.
With the August: A Study performance Silver Simons says she embarks on a journey that is both an investigation of and a response to the core essence of the month. On each performance day, Silver Simons will post a video on her Web site, donisilversimons.com/, on YouTube and on Facebook and will also make an entry to her blog.
