A free five-week-long summer beach volleyball program will be offered for area youths from noon to 4 p.m. through Thursday, Aug. 12 at the Dockweiler Youth Center at Dockweiler State Beach, 12505 Vista del Mar, Playa del Rey.

The county Department of Beaches and Harbors has partnered with the official charity foundation of the AVP (Association of Volleyball Professionals) NIVEA Pro Volleyball Tour, the AVP Cares Foundation, to hold the youth volleyball camps.

The county Board of Supervisors approved the agreement with AVPCF to provide youth volleyball camps to Los Angeles County-based children’s organizations, representing over 320 children between the ages of 13-17 from diverse socio-economic backgrounds.

The Summer Kids Club is designed to get children out on the beach and encourage physical activity to combat the negative effects of childhood obesity by playing beach volleyball in a healthy and nurturing environment with AVP pros, program representatives said. The children will receive two hours of volleyball instruction and 1 ‡ hours of water time.

Participants will also take part in 30 minutes of interactive instruction from Heal the Bay volunteers. The program will focus on simple steps people can take to protect the coastal environment
