The inaugural Venice “Spring Fling” festival will highlight springtime at the beach with a free, full day of art and music at the Windward Avenue Plaza Saturday, May 7.

Described as an “offspring” of the popular Venice Beach Music Fest, the Spring Fling continues the tradition of bringing the artistic Venice community together in a celebration of the historical creative spirit of the beach, event organizers say.

Live music will be performed on the “Ocean Stage” from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The event will feature a variety of musicians, artists, dancers, and performers. Music headliners include the Tracii Guns Bastard Blues Band consisting of Tracii Guns on guitar, Bronx Style Bob on lead vocals, Muddy Stardust on bass, Doni Gray on drums, and Teddy ZigZag on organ. Other musical acts of the day include Al’s Peace, Mother Jones, Tone Def, Los Marijuanos, Hi-Stereo, Meet Me at the Pub, and Venrez.

The afternoon will also feature the 420 Comic, as well as dancers from American Tribal Style, Bellydance and Drums Troupe, Ya Harissa Bellydance Theater, and solo dancer Mila Starfire. The Ukulady, an entertainer for children and adults alike, will emcee the afternoon.

The accompanying art show features paintings, sculpture, and photography from local and international artists Ra Ra Superstar, Martha C. Wilson, Richard Yaker, Brian Mylius, Audrey McNamara, Michael R. Oddo, art by sky, Al Keith, Damon Warren, Lizi Ruch, Vincent Gordon, Rob Tobin, Sarah Jones, Inocente, David Wrathall, and Lisa Nakhjiri. Third Eye Tie Dye and Eclectic Hoops will also be on display and for sale. Music and art by festival participants can be previewed online by visiting: www.VeniceSpringFling.com.

This community event is made possible through the sponsorship of local businesses. Nikki’s is the official after-spot for the Venice Spring Fling and will be hosting a Hi-Stereo CD release happy hour following the band’s performance at the festival.

The Spring Fling Facebook site will feature contests and prizes leading up to the festival. Information, www.facebook.com/venicespringfling.
