The Qualcomm Million Dollar Challenge eight-day bicycle ride will stop over in Marina del Rey Thursday, November 2nd, to help raise $1 million for physically challenged athletes.

Two Los Angeles cyclists, Phil Fitzgerald and Gilberto Alavez, and 98 other riders will begin their journey in San Francisco Sunday, October 29th, and end it in San Diego on Saturday, November 4th.

Cyclists will make stopovers in Santa Cruz, Big Sur, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Marina del Rey and Dana Point.

The Qualcomm Million Dollar Challenge raises funds to benefit the Challenged Athletes Foundation, a nonprofit organization that helps physically challenged athletes around the world live healthier lives by providing them with funding for specialized equipment, training and competition expenses.

“Sports empower people, whether physically challenged or not,” said Fitzgerald, a member of the foundation’s board of directors.

“Challenged Athletes Foundation helps individuals transcend not only their physical limitations but also offers them tools to overcome psychological and emotional barriers as well.”
