A 28-year-old man was killed in a shooting in an alley between 19th and 20th Streets in the Pico Neighborhood of Santa Monica Saturday, June 28th, police said.
Police believe the incident was gang-related but are unsure if the victim was involved in gangs, Santa Monica police Sgt. Renaldi Thruston said.
Police were called to an alley in the 2000 block of 19th Court, north of Pico Boulevard, at 9:53 p.m. regarding a report of shots fired in the area, he said.
When officers arrived at the scene they were unable to locate any potential victims or witnesses, but while they were searching the area a few minutes later, they were notified by a local hospital that a man was being treated for a gunshot wound, Thruston said.
The man, identified as Gardena resident Byron Lopez, later died of his injuries at the hospital, Thruston said.
The death is the fourth homicide to occur in Santa Monica this year.
Police determined that Lopez was in the 2000 block of 19th Court at the time the incident occurred and was shot, Thruston said. The victim’s friends then drove him to the hospital.
Thruston said police are investigating the circumstances of the shooting and are looking for two suspects, described only as African Americans, in connection to the incident.
