St. Bernard High School in Playa del Rey celebrated Latino Heritage Month by hosting guest speaker Christine Chavez, granddaughter of civil rights leader Cesar Chavez, Thursday, September 21st.

Chavez gave a history of the United Farm Workers Union, how she became involved as a small child and spoke of the impact her grandfather had on farm workers and their rights across the nation and she encouraged students to become involved in their communities on issues they feel are important.

She continues her grandfather’s legacy by endorsing and campaigning for elected officials, lobbying for legislation and overseeing public outreach activities.

She currently works for the Community College League of California.
