Witness testimony started Monday, October 25th, in the first day of an expected two-week hearing in a Superior Court House near Los Angeles International Airport to determine if Russell Weller — the 87-year-old Santa Monica man who allegedly drove his 1992 Buick Le Sabre through the Santa Monica Farmers Market last year — will face trial for manslaughter. Ten people died in the incident, ranging from seven months to 78 years old.

One witness to the incident testified at the hearing that an elderly man behind the wheel of his sedan, drove through a barricade and struck a man — sending him through the air.

Weller has pleaded not guilty to the manslaughter charges.

His lawyers allege the incident was an accident.

If convicted, Weller faces a maximum of 18 years in prison.

Lawsuits have been filed against the City of Santa Monica.
