The Boys & Girls Club of Venice recently presented four high school seniors with $32,000 in college scholarships as part of the Wise Family Foundation College Scholarship program.
The four students honored, who are all Venice club members, include Shirein Bakhyt and Jaclyn Rocha of Venice High School, Abel Amossa of Ouchi High School in Los Angeles and Eduardo Guerrero of Culver City High School.
“Through the Wise family’s wonderful support we are able to prove to our club members that college is a reality, and we are here to support them for the long run,” club Executive Director Erikk Aldridge said.
The scholarship recipients plan to attend the following universities in the fall — Amossa, UCLA; Rocha, University of California-Santa Cruz; Bakhyt, UC-Irvine; and Guerrero, The Art Institute of California — Los Angeles.
Each recipient will receive $2,000 a year over the next four years to support their college endeavors.
The scholarship program was established in 2007 and received its initial funding from a donation by Michael Wise, a past president of the board of directors for the club who now serves on the board of governors. The scholarship fund is also supported by Playa Vista resident and club board member David Iben, and Jerry H. Snyder.
The program currently has eight students in various colleges including UCLA, Tulane University, San Diego State, San Francisco State, UC-Riverside, UC-Irvine, UC-San Diego and Cal State University, Dominguez Hills.
