The Santa Monica Elks honored West Los Angeles Veterans Administration Hospital volunteers Carrie Brandiline and Sadie Stewart during the Elks’ annual Citizen of the Year Award banquet Thursday, April 30th.

Brandiline and Stewart have worked in volunteer services at the hospital for over ten years. Robbie Robinson, chairman of the award banquet, said Citizen of the Year honorees in the community are recognized for outstanding service to the community. The recognition can be based on an outstanding event or continuous service over many years.

The two honorees this year have provided recreational events for the patients and managed the clothing store, where the community drops off used clothing in good condition. Many of the patients were previously homeless, according to the Elks.

Whenever the Santa Monica Elks had an event, whether it was a barbecue, giving flowers for the patients, or candy for the nurses station, Brandiline and Stewart were extremely helpful, said Curt Curtiss, a spokesman for the Elks.

The two women helped the Elks turn a good event into an outstanding one, he said.
