The G2 Gallery in Venice will present Nature LA: Cheryl Medow, a solo exhibit of photo montage works highlighting the wildlife of Africa, beginning Tuesday, April 3 through May 13.
An opening reception is scheduled from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday, April 7 at G2, 1503 Abbot Kinney Blvd., Venice.
Often, when confronted with Medow’s images, viewers are unable to discern whether they are looking at paintings or photographs, a G2 Gallery spokeswoman said. Santa Monica-based artist Medow accumulates images of wildlife and their habitats, layering them to create works that are evocations of Natural History Museum dioramas, the spokeswoman notes.
Wildlife is typically the focal point of Medow’s images. To achieve this style, she first photographs the creatures, such as big cats and birds in mating season. After separately shooting the landscape and the flora of the area, she adds them to the original image to provide context and a rather dreamy sense of place to her animal subject.
The montage aspect is rounded out with bits of relevant ephemera such as maps and postage stamps. Medow’s final product has raised comparisons to works by early 19th century naturalist painters.
All proceeds from exhibit art sales will benefit the Sierra Club.
