The Italian theatre company Blue in the Face is performing for the first time at the Santa Monica Playhouse as part of a new reciprocal theatre exchange between the two companies.
In its first visit to Santa Monica, Blue in the Face will present four nights of company founder Enrico Mario Falconi’s new play Camping in its original Italian (with a pre-show synopsis provided in English) beginning Thursday, February 26th through Sunday, March 1st.
Falconi’s poetic drama tells of a group of hikers on a camping trip in the mountains whose journey becomes a metaphor for self-knowledge and awareness and the mountain itself becomes a sanctuary where masks are discarded and truths are shared, according to Santa Monica Playhouse.
Written and directed by Falconi, Camping features company members Benedetto Baldini, Lara Basso, Patrizio De Paolis, Dario Falconi, Enrico Maria Falconi, Laura Farina, Emiliano Giammaria, Andrea Guerini, Attilio Monti, Simone Mori, Giorgia Scifoni and Francesca Maria Staiano. Laura Farina is the show’s choreographer, Francesca Romana Leonardi is the costume designer, and Nicole Cassera and Martina Tanchella are the make-up artists. Luca Damiani is the graphic designer.
The Blue in the Face theatre company was founded in 2003 in the Civitavecchia section of Rome. It looks at theatre as a form of “ethic-art,” which centers on the idea of recitation as a personal strong tool for growth, according to a company spokesperson. The company motto, “We live of dreams, like others, only that we live our own” is the testimony of an art-conception as a “sweet revolution” of the way to do culture, the spokesperson said.
Since 2005, the company has offered training courses for actors, directors, make-up artists, lighting designers, art directors, and Web designers of all ages. In 2008, the theatre company’s cultural promotion introduced a new youth initiative: Blue in the Face EXP, an acting-training program.
The American premiere of Camping will be the new initiative’s first overseas venture.
Camping performances are scheduled Thursday, February 26th, Friday, February 27th and Saturday, February 28th at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 5:30 p.m. at The Other Space at the Santa Monica Playhouse, 1211 Fourth St., Santa Monica.
Tickets are $16.00, with discounts available for students, educators and groups of ten or more and include a post-show reception with the cast. Advance reservations are recommended. Information, (310) 394-9779, ext. 1.
