The fourth annual free Jazz on the Lawn series outside Santa Monica City Hall this month will continue with a performance by Grupo Falso Baiano Sunday, August 16th.
The concert by the young ensemble is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. at the City Hall lawn, 1685 Main St., Santa Monica. The series, held on four Sundays this month, features jazz and world music performances from hot talent and future stars.
During the August 16th event, Grupo Falso Baiano will perform choro, a musical form created by
blending African rhythms with the structures of classical music.
Dating from the 19th century, choro has evolved into many forms including the samba, while retaining its daring improvisation, highly sophisticated counterpoint, and syncopated Afro-Brazilian rhythms, a city Cultural Affairs Division spokesperson said.
The group says its mandolin, seven-string guitar, reeds and percussion create “the true incarnation of Brazilian soul.”
Jazz on the Lawn is free to
the public and parking is conveniently located at the Santa Monica Civic Center (free after 4 p.m.)
Soft drinks and water are available for purchase, with proceeds benefiting the Virginia Avenue Park Teen Center, a youth arts and recreation center providing educational and cultural arts programs designed by teens for teens.
