The Santa Monica Kiwanis Club and First Federal Bank of California presented 24 music scholarships to Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District students Wednesday, June 21st.

Awards were presented in two categories — instrumental and vocal — and in three divisions: middle school (sixth to eighth grades), high school (ninth and tenth grades) and high school (11th and 12th).

Almost 100 district students qualified for the scholarship’s final competition. An outside panel judged the finals. The winners were:

Middle School Instrumental — first place, Evan Kahn, seventh grade, Lincoln Middle School, cello;

second place, Rebecca Steinberg, eighth grade, Lincoln Middle School, flute;

third place, Connor Vance, eighth grade, John Adams Middle School, violin; and fourth place, Pepito Escarce, eighth grade, Lincoln Middle School, violin

Middle School Vocal — first place, Madelyn Ross, eighth grade, John Adams Middle School, soprano;

second place, Tanya Varimezova, eighth grade, Lincoln Middle School, soprano;

third place, Dina Murokh, eighth grade, Lincoln Middle School, mezzo-soprano; and

fourth place, Christopher Chappell, seventh grade, John Adams Middle School, tenor

High School Instrumental, grades nine and ten — first place, James Hodges, tenth grade, Santa Monica High School, clarinet;

second place, Ben Bartelt, tenth grade, Santa Monica High School, violin;

third place, Jessica Marot, ninth grade, Santa Monica High School, clarinet; and

fourth place, Richard Dobeck, ninth grade, Santa Monica High School, clarinet
