Members and guests of the LAX Coastal Area Chamber of Commerce will salute outgoing Chair of the Board Kathi Woodley of Southwest Airlines and welcome new Chair Sibyl Buchanan of Playa Vista, at the chamber’s annual Installation Dinner Friday, June 17.

The event, with a 1970s rock and roll theme, will mark the beginning of Buchanan’s term. She will guide the organization through June 30, 2012 and her first duty as chair will be riding in the chamber’s annual Fourth of July Parade.

The installation is scheduled at 6 p.m. at the Marina del Rey Marriott Hotel, where Woodley will present awards to chamber members who have made significant contributions during the 2010-11 chamber year.

Honorees who will be recognized include:

Loyola Marymount University – Sustainable Business Award; Playa Vista and Buchanan – Educational Leadership Award; Melody Bar & Grill – Outstanding Small Business Award; Glenn Sampert of The Westin Los Angeles Airport – Hugo Francis Ambassador Award; Ryan Gales of Jenkins, Gales & Martinez – Rising Star Award; Tom Flintoft of Kindel Gagan – Outstanding Service Award; Geoff Maleman of Maleman Ink Public Relations – Jim Bunch Spirit Award; David Voss of Voss, Silverman & Braybrooke – Helmsman Leadership Award; David A. Herbst of Mercury Air Group – Chairman’s Award; and Cyndi Hench, neighborhood council president – Pierre Basbous Honorary Mayor’s Award.

The installing officer at this year’s event will be Joseph Czyzyk, chairman and CEO of Mercury Air Group and a city of Los Angeles commissioner under the last three mayors.

At the installation, Buchanan will formally announce Voss, a longtime Playa del Rey resident, as the community’s honorary mayor. Buchanan said she chose Voss for his longtime involvement and dedication to the community.

Voss is a 1986 graduate of the University of Southern California Law Center, where he won the American Judicature Society Award for Appellate Advocacy, and compiled a formidable record as a three-time U.S. Intercollegiate National Champion in public speaking and was ranked number two in the world in 1982.

Voss strongly believes in supporting the community and encourages every attorney to participate in community-based organizations. In recognition of this commitment, he was honored in 2004 as the Community Leader of the Year by the Boys & Girls Club of Venice, where he now serves on the Board of Governors.

In addition, Voss is a founding member of the Neighborhood Council of Westchester-Playa and has served as a member of the Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners and as the mayor’s appointee to the West Los Angeles Area Planning Commission (2004). On weekends, he is a serious sailboat racer with multiple national championships to his credit.
