Loyola Marymount University’s (LMU) literacy and reading intervention program, “The Bookworm Project,” has received a $50,000 donation from Verizon Wireless.

Created by LMU psychology professor Judy Foy, the program provides kindergartners with intensive supplementary reading instruction in a fun and positive environment, said a university spokesperson.

Verizon’s funding makes possible additional training, supervision and mentoring of teachers and tutors, which can then add students to the program, the spokesperson said.

The program pairs LMU student tutors with underserved children in local schools to work intensively on developing literacy skills.
