The Argonaut has compiled a list of local events scheduled in celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
In conjunction with the official birthday celebration Monday, January 18th, a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. interfaith breakfast will be held in Santa Monica Friday, January 15th, and the Santa Monica Symphony Orchestra will hold its Fourth Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Concert Sunday, January 17th.
Dr. Adena Loston, president of St. Philip’s College in Texas and a former Santa Monica College (SMC) administrator, will then be the keynote speaker at a celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday in Santa Monica Monday, January 18th.
The theme of this year’s celebration in Santa Monica is “Keeping His Dream Alive.” The events are coordinated by The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Westside Coalition in cooperation with the Westside Interfaith Coalition and the Santa Monica Symphony Orchestra.
An interfaith prayer breakfast featuring speaker The Rev. Louis Chase, minister of the Hamilton United Methodist Church of Los Angeles, is scheduled from 7:30 to 9 a.m. January 15th at Calvary Baptist Church, 1502 20th St., Santa Monica. (Parking at St. Anne’s across the street). The suggested donation is $25 per person or $200 for a table of ten.
Interfaith musical service
An interfaith musical service commemorating King will be co-hosted by Beth Shir Sholom, 1827 California Ave., Santa Monica at 7:30 p.m. January 15th. Calvary Baptist, First AME Church, the Unitarian Universalist Church and representatives of other congregations, will join together for the service. The synagogue band, the TishTones, and a choir made up of members of the other congregations will perform at the celebration.
Talking Stick celebration
Venice MoZaic Art, Music and Poetry will host its Eighth Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration from 7 to 11 p.m. January 15th at the Talking Stick Coffee Lounge, 1411 Lincoln Blvd., Venice. The event will include footage from King’s most famous speeches.
The celebration also features artists, musicians and poets paying homage to the historic civil rights leader. Admission is free.

A concert featuring the Santa Monica Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Allen Robert Gross, as well as tuba player soloist Christopher Miller performing pieces by Mussorgsky, Stravinski, Williams and M·rquez, will be held at 3:30 p.m. January 17th at SGI-USA auditorium, 525 Wilshire Blvd., Santa Monica. Admission is free.

King birthday celebration
A multi-ethnic interfaith program that includes inspirational readings and presentations of scholarships is scheduled at 9 a.m. Monday, January 18th at SGI-USA auditorium, 525 Wilshire Blvd., Santa Monica. Admission is free.
The celebration is followed by a community involvement fair from 11 a.m. to noon at 606 Wilshire Blvd. Admission is free and parking is available on Seventh Street, behind the 7-11 store on Wilshire Boulevard.
Keynote speaker Loston is the 14th president of St. Philip’s College, the nation’s only historically black college and Hispanic serving institution. She previously served as the director of education and chief education officer for NASA and has served in higher education for over 35 years.
