Los Angeles Councilman Bill Rosendahl has been named chairman of the Los Angeles City Council Public Works Committee.
Rosendahl will also have seats on the City Council Transportation Committee and a new City Council committee on homelessness.
He will retain his seat on the City Council Budget and Finance Committee, and has been elevated to vice-chair of a reconstituted Commerce Committee, which oversees Los Angeles International Airport (LAX.)
“These committee assignments will give me the opportunity to focus on my top priorities,” Rosendahl said.
“I am excited about the leverage they give me to deliver constituent services, create mass transit, promote regional aviation, fight homelessness, and find money for essential services, like hiring more police officers.”
City Council President Eric Garcetti said the new assignments will take effect Monday, January 30th.
Garcetti assumed the City Council presidency Sunday, January 1st.
As chair of the Public Works Committee, Rosendahl will have oversight of the city agencies responsible for delivering the bulk of city services, including tree trimming, road repair, street beautification projects, sidewalk repair and street lighting.
The panel also oversees the city Bureau of Engineering, which manages all city capital improvement projects.
Rosendahl said his membership on the County Transportation Committee gives him “a stronger platform to work on (my) signature issue: fighting traffic and promoting mass transit.”
“Sitting on the Transportation Committee will give me a stronger voice to fight for extending the Exposition Line to the beach, extending the Green Line to LAX, developing light rail on Lincoln Boulevard, and completing of the Red Line subway,” Rosendahl said.
Rosendahl said he was extremely pleased about being vice chair of the committee overseeing LAX.
“As a member of this committee, I was able to fulfill my campaign promise of promoting regional aviation and stopping LAX expansion,” Rosendahl said. “This new role will provide me with even more influence to ensure the rest of Southern California takes its fair share of air traffic.”
The City Council committee formerly known as Commerce, Energy and Natural Resources will now be called Trade, Commerce and Tourism.
It will have oversight of city airports and the Port of Los Angeles. Councilwoman Janice Hahn will chair the committee.
Rosendahl said he is pleased to remain on the Budget and Finance Committee, and plans to focus on working with the mayor and his colleagues to find revenue to hire more police officers.
Rosendahl was also named to the Ad Hoc Committee on Homelessness, a committee he proposed last year.
Rosendahl said the new panel would focus on ways to aid those without shelter and protect neighborhoods impacted by homelessness.
Rosendahl will also retain his membership on the Ad Hoc Committee on Gang Violence and Youth Development.
He will be giving up chairmanship of the Education and Neighborhoods Committee, which will now be chaired by Councilman Alex Padilla.
