Mar Vista resident and businessman Marty Popkin will receive $500 in a drawing hosted by the American Red Cross of Santa Monica.

The Santa Monica chapter dropped 1,050 numbered golf balls over the MountainGate Country Club, Monday morning, August 20th, to raise funds for the chapter.

Members of the public purchased numbered regulation golf balls for $15 each. Popkin, who owns MP Printing on Washington Place in Mar Vista, said he was watching the proceedings broadcast live on KTLA, Channel 5’s Morning Show.

“I knew if I got a call from the Red Cross after the drop, I had won,” Popkin said.

Sure enough, a half hour after the 8:30 a.m. drop, Marian Blount, who works at the chapter and who sold Popkin two balls, including the winning ball — Number 78 — made the call to Popkin.

“As soon as I heard Marian’s voice, I knew my ball had fallen into the cup,” Popkin said. “I got my first hole in one and I didn’t even have to swing a club.”

The numbered balls were loaded on a helicopter donated by Helinet and dropped over an especially prepared “green” at the MountainGate Country Club in Los Angeles. The owner of the numbered ball that fell into the hole “scored” $500, provided through the Red Cross sponsors.

Although Popkin was not on hand to watch the drop, participants and their guests showed up and cheered as hundreds of balls cascaded out of the Helinet chopper onto the “green.”

Golf balls were provided by Roger Dunn Golf Shops, Penmar Golf Course and Richard Higgins of Porterville.
