The United States Coast Guard will participate in this year’s Discover Marina del Rey Day, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, October 8th, at Burton Chace Park, 13650 Mindanao Way, Marina del Rey. Admission is free.
Starting with rarely-held tours aboard the Marina del Rey-based Coast Guard cutter Halibut, the public will have an opportunity to meet rescue swimmers like those portrayed in the recently released Touchstone film The Guardian.
The Guardian is a fictional story of a troubled young man (played by Ashton Kutcher) who enlists in the Coast Guard in an effort to find his place in life.
Although the story is fictional, the film is described as based on the reality of service in the Coast Guard.
The public will also have an opportunity to see rescue demonstrations involving the Halibut, a 41-foot utility boat from Coast Guard Station Los Angeles/Long Beach and an HH-65A Dolphin short range recovery helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Los Angeles.
Also on static display is the Guardian, a 25-foot transportable port security boat from the Marine Safety and Security Team.
The public is invited to visit the Coast Guard Forces exhibit at the entrance to Burton Chace Park, where they can obtain information on Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary recruiting. There will also be information on boater safety, free boater education classes and environmental protection or attendees can just meet and greet the men and women of Coast Guard Forces.
