A new free tutoring center — called 826LA — has opened in the SPARC (Social and Public Resource Center) building, 685 Venice Blvd., Venice.

826LA is a nonprofit organization designed to support students with creative and expository writing skills, and to help teachers inspire their students to write. The new Venice center was created from the concept of 826 Valencia in San Francisco, founded by best-selling author Dave Eggers.

826LA offers free drop-in tutoring for students eight to 18 years old Monday through Thursday from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Also offered is a variety of workshops and adult seminars.

Upcoming student workshops include “Learn to Write a Cool Screenplay in Just Three Classes” and “Be Your Own Publisher: How to Make a Magazine.”

An upcoming adult seminar for aspiring writers Sunday, May 1st, will include writers Matt Stone of “SouthPark,” Jonathon Groff of “Late Night With Conan O’Brien,” Rob Cohen of the “Ben Stiller Show” and Nell Scovell of “The Simpsons.”
