The John Wayne Cancer Institute was expected to announce the creation of the Dirks/ Dougherty Prostate Center with a gift of $6.5 million for the creation of a new translational research and clinical program at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 29th. The announcement was scheduled to be made at the John Wayne Cancer Institute Research Building in the Gene Raymond Lobby at 2200 Santa Monica Blvd., Santa Monica.
The new prostate center will include a robotic surgical system and a laboratory, according to spokesperson Dienna D’ Olimpio.
Carolyn Dirks, described as a longtime trustee, supporter and friend of Saint John’s and the John Wayne Cancer Institute, her husband Brett Dougherty and their family donated the $6.5 million to address prostate cancer, a disease that is said to affect one in six men.
This gift is the largest of its kind for a joint initiative of the John Wayne Cancer Institute and Saint John’s Health Center, said D’Olimpio.
