Boston Symphony assistant conductor Marcelo Lehninger will make a return appearance to lead the New West Symphony in its fifth Masterpiece Series concert of the season at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 15 at Santa Monica High School’s Barnum Hall, 601 Pico Blvd.
Lehninger made his New West Symphony debut in January 2011 after taking over at the last minute for the originally scheduled conductor. Guest artist Andrew Janss will be the soloist for Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme for Cello & Orchestra, Opus33.
The program will also include Franz Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 88 in G Major, Hob. I:88 and the Symphony No. 5 in E Minor, Opus 64 by Tchaikovsky.
The Brazilian-born Lehninger stepped in for the orchestra’s maestro James Levine at short notice last year to conduct the world premiere of Harrison Birtwistle’s Violin Concerto with Christian Testzlaff.
He also serves as associate conductor of the Minas Gerais Philharmonic Orchestra in Brazil.
Tickets range from $25 to $98. Tickets can be purchased by phone, (866) 776-8400, at the New West Symphony office, or on the symphony website at www.newwestsymphony.org.
