Santa Monica Place will be one of the first shopping malls in Southern California to add the new design of the Disney Store when the center opens August 6th, and it will also launch a new exhibit, The Mannequin Collective, for the grand opening, mall owners have announced.

The Disney Store offers special features that will include the “Disney Princess with magic mirror,” designed to enhance the shopping experience with a store developed from a child’s perspective and integrating the latest technology, according to Disney representatives.

Disney says ten percent of the sales will be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and to Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity in the United Kingdom on the day of each new store opening in the US, Spain, Italy and Portugal.

The Mannequin Collective invites original expressions of art for a special exhibit during the August grand opening of the new 550,000-square foot, three-level, open air shopping and dining destination in Santa Monica, said officials at Macerich, owner of Santa Monica Place.

Using blank, full-size mannequins as their canvas, up to 100 local designers, artists, retailers and community leaders will create individual expressions of art and fashion to celebrate the center’s opening in a three-week exhibit.

The Mannequin Collective is a partnership that benefits Otis College of Art and Design. The top five mannequins, chosen by a jury of local artists and community leaders, will be displayed at the Otis campus in Westchester, as well as at the fashion design location in downtown Los Angeles.

Santa Monica Place will donate $10,000 to support scholarships at Otis in the name of the grand design winner of the juried event, according to Santa Monica Place representatives.

“Fostering artistic expression is an exciting way to link a new fashion destination with the city’s robust art and design world,” said Samuel Hoi, president of Otis College of Art and Design.
