A 16-year-old, identified by police as Gary Ortiz, was killed and two men were wounded after a drive-by shooting Sunday morning, July 30th, on McLaughlin Avenue in Mar Vista, close to the Culver City border, police said.

The 16-year-old was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Pacific detective Mike DePasquale said.

A 19-year-old man remains in critical condition at a local hospital and a third victim, 22, is hospitalized in stable condition, DePasquale said.

The three victims, all of Los Angeles, and two female passengers had been sitting in a Toyota Corolla in the 4000 block of McLaughlin Avenue, near Washington Boulevard when the shooting occurred at about 11:30 a.m., DePasquale said.

They were double-parked on the street while they waited to pick up a friend on their way to the beach, LAPD Officer Mike Lopez said.

Two Hispanic males in a burgundy-colored four-door vehicle then pulled up, made “confrontational remarks” and shot at the victims’ vehicle, DePasquale alleged.

“They fired numerous rounds at the victims’ car and fled northbound on McLaughlin,” DePasquale alleged.

While the three male victims were shot multiple times, the two female passengers in the Corolla were not struck, Lopez said.

The two shooting suspects remain at large.

Police said the incident appears to be gang-related.

Anyone with additional information regarding this incident is asked to call LAPD Pacific homicide detectives at (310) 482-6313, or (877) 529-3855 (877-LAWFULL) during weekends and off-hours.

EARLIER INCIDENT — The incident occurred only hours after another Mar Vista shooting at 12:30 a.m. near National and Sawtelle boulevards, police said.

In the earlier incident, a man received non-life-threatening injuries after he was reportedly shot at least five times while in his vehicle.

No suspects have been apprehended in that shooting, police said.
