The Santa Monica College Cosmetology Department will hold an open house to showcase its major makeover with new equipment and furniture from 2 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 17th.
The department is located in the college Business Building, Room 143, 1900 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica.
A recent $136,000 federal vocational grant enabled the department to replace its 28-year-old equipment.
There are 90 new cosmetology stations, and new chairs, facial beds, facial machines and other equipment have been purchased.
“It has been wonderful to have these new work stations and other equipment,” said Helen LeDonne, department chair.
“They are modern and user-friendly, with easy-to-clean surfaces and holders for blow dryers and curling irons,” she said.
College officials said the cosmetology department is one of the fastest-growing departments at the college.
Six years ago, 75 students were enrolled. The department now enrolls more than 500 students.
The department offers full- and part-time programs in cosmetology, skin care and nail care, all of which are designed to prepare students to take state licensing exams.
Full hair, nail and facial salon services are also provided to the public.
LeDonne said she expects the program to continue to grow as demand for services increases, particularly in the area of skin care services.
The department is also exploring the possibility of expanding to include spa services and salon management training.
