New Year’s events include:

The 48th Annual Venice Penguin Swim begins the new year at noon Tuesday, January 1st, 2008, at the Venice Beach Breakwater, Windward Avenue at the ocean, Venice.

The 2007 Penguin Swim featured more than 80 participants, three-foot waves, and sunny 65-degree weather, with a water temperature of 58 degrees.

The honorary king, Dick Van Patten, and queen, Barbara Bight, were chosen from among the “amateur fun-lovers,” while prince Scott Hubbard and princess Kailey Makuta won the competitive 300 yard race. Hubbard turned in a time of three minutes, five seconds, while Makuta won with a time of three minutes, 34 seconds.

“There was a great crowd of onlookers, and it was a great family day of fun,” says event coordinator Mary McGuirk.

NEW YEAR’S EVE — The New Year’s Eve Peace and Environmental Celebration will have a theme of “More Trees, Less Bush” at 7 p.m. Monday, December 31st, at The Church in Ocean Park, 235 Hill St., Santa Monica.

The event will feature a “Pre-Primary Comedy Review,” with stand-up comics Rick Overton, Denise Munro Robb, David Zasloff, and Larry Hankin.

There will also be live music, dancing, an all-you-can-eat vegetarian buffet dinner, complimentary champagne, and complimentary reserved parking.

Admission is $30, $20 for low-income individuals.
