Students from the Human Efforts Aimed at Relating Together (HEART) program at Mark Twain Middle School in Mar Vista donated $100 of the proceeds from their Neon Glow Dance last month to the American Red Cross.

The students held the Neon Glow Dance as a celebration for completing the California Standards Test (CST) exams, and they said they also wanted to contribute to the community.

Students learned firsthand how to plan a dance and carry out their plan by breaking up into committees such as finance, food, music, games and promotion. The committees created a skit and each group went into five classes to promote the dance.

Principal Raul Fernandez, Los Angeles Unified School District representative Nathan Ware, Kevin Michini of the Venice Community Study Lounge, and Assistant Principal Mary Reid worked with the students to make sure the dance was a success.
