Former professional basketball player Bill Sharman will serve as grand marshal for the 42nd annual Marina del Rey Holiday parade at 6 p.m. Saturday, December 11th.
Sharman will join the Los Angeles Laker Girls on the grand marshal’s boat, Chelsea II, which, along with the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Halibut, will begin the two-hour parade down the Marina main channel.
A fireworks show at 5:55 p.m. will be the official kickoff of the 6 p.m. boat parade.
“We’re thrilled that Bill Sharman will take the helm as grand marshal,” said Cindy Williams, boat parade president.
“Bill Sharman is an NBA (National Basketball Association) legend and we feel very honored to have him on board as part of our Holiday Boat Parade,” Williams said.
Sharman’s basketball career began in high school and continued to the University of Southern California, where he was inducted into the USC Hall of Fame.
He played for the NBA Washington Capitols for one year, then spent ten years with the Boston Celtics, where he played on four championship teams.
In 1961, he retired as a player and began a coaching career that included one season coaching the Lakers.
He then became the Laker general manager and team president from 1982 to 1988. He is currently a special consultant to the Lakers.
As a player, coach, general manager and consultant, Sharman has 15 NBA championship rings.
In September, he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts.
